Key Dates for Social Media - January 2021

January may be the most loathed month of the year – It’s after the festive period and the celebrations it brought, it’s cold and now, if you’re in the UK, the new month has come with a new lockdown.

But fear not! There are plenty of key dates for social media in January that can be celebrated and shout about! Not only will these help keep you active on your social media with just-for-fun days to engage with your audience, but they can also help you jump onto trending topics with a possible reach increase.

So, get on board with the dates that are relatable, even if obscure, to your brand and audience and include some fun, engaging content in your social media strategy for this month.

January Dates for Social Media

1st – New Year’s Day – Okay, we’re a bit late with this one! Celebrations were subdued a bit while everyone quietly tiptoed into 2021. Despite the way the year has started, we’re still determined to make it a great one!

5th – Bird Day – Promoted by the Avian Welfare Coalition, Bird Day all about bringing awareness to keeping birds in the wild and not in captivity. It is also a day to support reputable bird rescues and sanctuaries.

14th – International Kite Day – Kites have been around for centuries as a fun pastime that is still loved today by many. International Kite Day falls on the same day as the Kite Festival in Gujarat, India, where people from around the world gather for a kite flying day. This year may be a bit different, but it won’t deter the love for kites! Have you ever been kite flying?

15th – Hat Day – Who doesn’t love a good hat? Hats come in all sorts of shapes and sizes as a fashionable accessory to serving a purpose like blocking out the sun and keeping our heads warm. They have been used as cultural and status symbols, protection and forms of expression. Why not don your favourite hat and share it with the world with a selfie? It’s a great way of showing a little personality of the people behind the brand!

17th – Ditch the New Year’s Resolution Day – This is the day that is said most people abandon their new year’s resolution by. But not you, right?! You got this!

18th – Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Martin Luther King Jr. was an influential civil rights leader in the US who is still revered today for his fight for racial equality. First observed in 1986, this public holiday is more than about a day off, but about the fight for equality that is still happening today. This year will be more important than ever after what 2020 brought to light.

18th – Blue Monday – The third Monday of the year, known as Blue Monday, is said to be the “most depressing day of the year” – but not on our watch! The day is what you make of it. There are a lot of things to be positive about. Share your positives and spread a little cheer on this day!

19th – Popcorn Day – There’s nothing better than warm, freshly popped popcorn and a good movie! Which is your go-to flavour?

20th – Cheese Lovers Day – This is a day for us, definitely! Are you a cheese lover, too?

23rd – Pie Day – Okay, maybe this day is for us, as well! What kind of pie is your favourite? Sweet or savoury?

25th – Burns Night – The 25th January marks Scottish poet Robert Burns birthday! Usually celebrated with a Burns Supper, the night consists of traditional foods accompanied with Robert Burns’ famous works. Haggis, neeps and tatties, anyone?

29th – Fun at Work Day – We aim to have fun at work every day! But sometimes working from home means we forget to just have a little fun! If you work with a team, why not arrange a little lunchtime quiz and informal chat? If you’re a team of one, you can still make it a fun day! Crank up your favourite tunes, arrange for a virtual lunch date with friends or other teams of one – anything that will put a smile on your face. This is so important when working from home too!

31st – The Grammys – The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards is due to take place (as of publishing) on the 31st, although it may be a little bit different this year. If you could give an award to “Best Artist Who Kept Me Sane During Lockdowns”, who would that go to?
