May is always an exciting month. The days are warmer, longer, and there is quite to celebrate. This year, there is even more to shout about, with many businesses being back at doing what they love or being busy behind the scenes to get ready to re-open mid-month.
So, to help keep your social media consistent in these busy times, here are just some just-for-fun and awareness dates for May for social media marketing to add a bit of variety and fun to your posts, as well as to take advantage of often trending topics.
May 2021 Social Media Holidays
1st – May Day – May Day is a traditional celebration of springtime, mainly by European countries, to which the origins date back thousands of years!
2nd – World Laughter Day – Laughter really does have a lot of benefits, and really, there is nothing better than a good laugh with friends and family. Some of the best memories we have involve fits of giggles! What makes you laugh the most?
3rd – May Bank Holiday – Put your feet up and relax! It’s a May Bank Holiday weekend, so fingers crossed for good weather.
4th – Star Wars Day – May the fourth be with you! Who else is a major fan of the Star Wars series?
5th – Cinco De Mayo – Although a Mexican celebration to mark victory at the Battle of Puebla, this fun day has now spread to other parts of the world, often celebrated with lots of margaritas and delicious Mexican cuisine (so count us in!).
5th – International Midwive’s Day – Today applauds the dedication of our midwives! They are absolutely tremendous and calm in times that can be so scary for new parents.
7th – World Password Day – When was the last time you changed your password? If your account was hacked, how many other accounts would they be able to access with that same password? Today acts as a reminder of how important it is to have an extremely unique password for each account (and multi-factor authentication at that!).
9th – Mother’s Day (US, Canada) – Happy Mother’s Day to all celebrating in the US, Canada and other parts of the world!
12th – International Nurses’ Day – It goes without saying that our nurses have been absolutely incredible this past year. Their hard work and dedication in these trying times often took a whole lot of courage, and we couldn’t be more appreciative. Thank a nurse today!
12th – Eid Al-Fitr – The evening of the 12th marks the end of Ramadan. Happy Eid to all celebrating!
13th – World Cocktail Day – Who doesn’t love a delicious cocktail/mocktail? Do you have a favourite?
15th – FA Cup Final – A big day in the football world, the FA Cup final this year sees Chelsea and Leicester battling it out for the coveted trophy. Who’s going to win it?
17th – World Baking Day – If you needed an excuse to bake a yummy cake or try out a new recipe, today’s your day! You could share your favourite creations or recipes and ask your audience to do the same or have a bake off with others.
20th – World Bee Day – Today is aimed at raising awareness of the importance of bees and beekeeping. Bees play an essential role in our ecosystem yet are under threat. Here is a bit more information and activities that can be done to promote a bee-friendly area.
21st – World Meditation Day – Do you practice meditation? Meditation is shown to have a such a positive physical and mental benefit. It reduces stress and anxiety, increases resilience, and so much more. It’s a good self-care exercise. Meditation doesn’t always mean bring out a mat and sitting cross-legged as well (although you can do that too!) It can also be a five-minute mindfulness session, guided or unguided. There are fantastic apps and videos out there to guide you. Take five-minutes to yourself to try one!
22nd – Eurovision Final – The much-loved European song contest is back this year and concludes tonight in Rotterdam! Often wacky yet wonderful, the Eurovision Song Contest is the longest running annual music competition. It’s always a hot topic on Twitter! Are you a Eurovision lover? (It’s absolutely our guilty pleasure!)
23rd – World Turtle Day – Today marks a day to bring awareness to the protection of turtles and tortoises. The American Tortoise Rescue even has social media graphics ready to be use to help “shellabrate” the day and help spread the word.
25th – National Wine Day (US) – It’s National Wine Day in the US, but don’t let that stop you from celebrating if you’re living anywhere else in the world. 😉 The only question that needs answering here is: Red, rosé or white?
28th – International Burger Day – Yes, there is even a day to celebrate the almighty burger! With so many variations and toppings out there now, how do you like yours? Where are some of your favourite burger joints? Give them a shoutout!
29th – National Biscuit Day (UK) – Can you not resist a good biscuit? What are some of your favourites? What’s good to dunk? Biscuits are simple yet delicious and often an essential during a tea break.
29th – Champions League Final – A trending topic every year, the Champion’s League final will take place tonight in Istanbul.
31st – Memorial Day (US) – Memorial Day is a federal holiday to reflect on and honour those who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the US Armed Forces. The day is often celebrated with family gatherings and honouring loved ones.
May is also Mental Health Awareness Month with a special awareness week from 10-16th May. The theme this year is “nature”.
It is also: National Walking Month, Share a Story Month and Skin Cancer Awareness Month!
